Two Fates

Canon 300D , EF 17-40/4.0L USM @ 29mm , f/22 , 23s , ISO 100

A mysterious take on the inifinite question of light and dark.

This photo was submitted for the opposites challenge at DPChallenge. It was taken in the pitch black, with a flash illuminating the left portion, and then a backlight illuminating the silhouette. All told, a 23 second exposure, and a bit of choreography going on with the lights, curtain, and myself!

Purple Heart

purplejpg

Canon 300D , EF 17-40/4.0L USM @ 29mm , f/4.0 , 1/60s , ISO 400 , RAW , Flash + Soft Box

Purple is this week’s ThemeThursday challenge. This shot just melts purple to me, for obvious reasons. And lots of love to my wife for being both a beautiful, and patient, model. Hopefully it won’t be the last time!

The harsh light in this photo really makes the purples stand out. It made my lovely model a lot more pale and eerie than she normally looks! Also avoiding the standard portrait soft-focus gives an edge here that I like.

Extra Virgin

extra-virgin.jpg

Canon 300D , EF 50/1.4 USM , f/4.5 , 1/50s , ISO 800

I love the colors in this photo. Technically, not perfect, but a good try, and a satisfying shot nonetheless. This shot was hand-held, so I couldn’t really get more depth of field (I’d already gone to 1/50s and ISO 800). This would’ve been a good time to have a tripod handy! Probably could have gotten a sharper all-around capture.

Weathered by Age

Canon 300D , EF 70-200/2.8L IS USM + Extender EF 1.4x II @280mm , f/5.0 , 1/400s , ISO 200

This amazing snapping turtle wandered out of our woods, and headed across the street. He/She would get frightened when we approached and tuck in his head, making him very cooperative for photos. I love the weathered, aged look that the detail of this shot captures. No real idea how old he is, but he looks like he’s seen many springs come and go.

Waters Edge

waters-edge.jpg

Canon 300D , EF 50/1.4 USM , f/2.0 , 1/200s , ISO 400 , EC-1/3 , RAW

This photo, blurry subject and all, really fills me with serenity. I like how the stick doesn’t draw attention away from the abstract shapes of the sand and water.

The photo was taken at Walden Pond in Concord, MA. The sun had just set over the trees across the pond, yielding the great lighting that sets the mood for the photo.
